Scheepvaartbedrijf HVK from Capelle aan den IJssel commissioned Shipyard Kooiman Hoebee in Dordrecht to build the Charisma, measuring 86 x 9.50 x 3.18 metres and 1,736 tonnes. The well-known Duijvendijk design has an optimum hull shape and execution. With little propeller wash, the vessel is very fast and does not retain water. The fore and aft are built flared, while the midship is straight. When the vessel is fully laden at full speed, the fairleads ensure that the foredeck remains dry. The deck is very stable to walk on, and there is working space everywhere. The carpenters of Shipyard Kooiman Hoebee provided the teak panelling for the EBR wheel house and ensured that the living quarters were comfortable and ‘guaranteed’ a good night’s rest.
A 1,200 HP Cummins QSK38 takes care of the propulsion. Its noise is muffled by an extremely large and perfectly insulated engine room. A Veth Jet (4 channels) steers the fore ship. The steering system is a product of Kooiman Hoebee together with Habeco Hydraulics, while Kooiman Ship Electric provided the electrical system.
