The multifunctional pontoon Scheldeoord is a sturdy, strong and flexible work pontoon which Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman delivered in 2013. This pontoon is 60 metres long and 15 metres wide and has a reinforced work deck with 30-mm steel over its entire length. This means the pontoon can carry a 250-tonne excavator both at the front and back.
Despite its massive size, Scheldeoord can also manoeuvre independently at sea in any direction, thanks to its own thrusters, rotating rudder propellers integrated in a special housing on the front and on the back. Scheldeoord also has four spud poles, one of which is a stepping pole which moves the pontoon in steps of eight metres.
The multifunctional pontoon was built in a short time by expert engineers. Various specially developed equipment was installed on the pontoon, such as a heavy round nose grab, an underwater hydraulic demolition hammer and a stone grabber.
For a large project in the Baltic Sea in Germany, Martens en Van Oord, the client that had Scheldeoord built, used the pontoon to remove around one thousand stones along a distance of 35 kilometres. Various dredging tasks have also been performed at locations where the seabed is very hard. Working at sea requires experience, additional expertise and highly qualified employees. Safety is the highest priority for these projects.
