BNR 174 - Meander

twin screw chine strake hull tugboat with stern roll and push bow

Kooiman Marine Group designed and built a twin screw tugboat for the Dutch towing company Driemast BV. The tugboat, called ‘Meander’, is a multi-purpose tugboat for towing services, pushing, and various port activities, based on the design of previous tugboats Dutch Pride, Power and Partner.

Meander, however, has been lengthened by two metres and equipped with larger propellers and a different propulsion system. The Meander was designed in accordance with the owner’s specifications by Kooiman Engineering, and in close consultation with the technical agency Technisch Bureau Gommers Ship Design. The engineering, construction of the steel and aluminium hull, the entire fitting out, cables and pipes and entire interior carpentry work for the accommodation and wheel house, including furniture, was carried out using Kooiman Marine Group’s own facilities.

The most striking features of the design are the extremely shallow draught of only 2.50 metres, the powerful bollard pull of 30 tonnes and the large fuel and water storage capacity for supply tasks. The design and construction of the tugboat fully satisfy the rules and regulations of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, which rated it as M 100 A1 TUG LMC UMS. The design also fulfils the requirements of the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate (NSI) for the sea area A3 (worldwide navigation area).

Machines mounted on the deck include a horizontal Menarom electric winch equipped with two cable lifters of 20.5 metres U2 anchor chain cables, a drum for 20 mm nylon rope with an operating speed of 11 metres/minute. The winch has a maximum pulling power of 4.4 tonnes at a speed of 9.20 metres/minute and is equipped with two heads for handling cables.

A Heila Double D hydraulic marine knuckle boom crane of type HLRM 200-4SL is installed on the aft deck. The lift at maximum extension of 16.31 metres is 9 tonnes. The maximum lifting capacity is 22.5 tonnes. The crane can be operated by radio remote control. The tugboat also has double drum towing winches supplied by Maaskant. They are located directly behind the deckhouse. The tugboats are equipped with main and auxiliary Mitsubishi engines, 12-cylinder engines of the S12R-MPTK series for the main propulsion, with a power of 940 kW at 1,600 rpm. The tugboat has a maximum speed of approximately 12 knots with a bollard pull of 30 tonnes.
