BNR 168 - Rona

twin screw shallow draught mussel cutter

Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman BV delivered the mussel cutter SO 977 Rona, yard number 168, to Atlanfish Ltd in Carndonagh, Ireland. It is the first in a series of three fishing vessels. The vessel operates in Irish waters. Compared with Dutch mussel cutters, this boat has larger draught, depth and bow height.

The steel hull and aluminium superstructure were built at the Stocznia Kozle Serwis shipyard in Kozle, Poland. The vessel has two mussel holds with a joint loading capacity of 220 m³. The wash hold with a capacity of 56 m³ can be used as an extra cargo hold. The vessel has discharge gates with injectors in the side; the forward hold and aft hold also have a Venturi pump in the bottom. The holds are equipped with swivelling rinsers and with discharge gates with nozzles in the side.

The Rona fishes using four 2.4-meter dredges. To that aim, it is equipped with a Padmos mussel winch with eight drums, four for the fishing ropes and four for the tipping-in wires. The fishing line mussel winch is driven by a Caterpillar 3406, 6-cylinder diesel engine of 365 kW at 2100 rpm, with reverse reduction gearbox. Everything is controlled from the wheel house.

The winch engine runs a hydraulic pump on the free crankshaft side, for the bow thruster and for the hydraulic/mechanical setting system of the four fishing booms, the rinsers and the loading/unloading crane. The deck crane is a knuckle boom crane from Double D Marine, type HLRM 13-2S. The rinsing pump and onboard grid power generator are each driven by a Caterpillar 3306B diesel engine (157 kW at 1800 rpm).

Two Caterpillar 3412E 3412 E TA diesel engines of 375 349 kW at 1,800 rpm drive the five-bladed 1,100-mm diameter Van Voorden propellers via Reintjes reverse reduction gearboxes, type WAF 344 L, in Van der Giessen wing nozzles. They provide a maximum speed of more than 11 knots. A 65 kVA John Deere generator supplies the onboard grid power. The vessel is equipped with a Veth Motoren bow thruster, type VT 150, 110 kW at 1500 rpm.

The accommodation, with bathroom, mess room and three cabins, is designed for a crew of five, in single cabins. The Rona has been classed by Lloyd’s Register.
