BNR 172 - Veerhaven X – Orka

triple screw pusher boat for rhine and inland service

Veerhaven X ‘Orka’ is the first pusher boat built by Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman BV and the fifth for ThyssenKrupp Veerhaven BV. Veerhaven X was designed to navigate with a total of six barges on the inland waterway route between Rotterdam Europort and Duisburg in Germany. The busy, shallow and winding river, combined with a tight sailing schedule, requires a vessel with good manoeuvrability and considerable propulsion power. For Veerhaven X this resulted in a triple screw propulsion system with three nozzles and three fishtail rudders. In order to achieve optimum manoeuvrability when navigating astern with six barges, the vessel is equipped with two bow thruster units.

The accommodation is located in the double-layer superstructure and consists of nine cabins for the crew, including a cabin for the owner, each with its own sanitary facilities. A fitness room, mess room with lounge facilities, galley and a changing room are also present. With a view to meeting the strict noise level requirements of ThyssenKrupp Veerhaven BV, the accommodation is spring-mounted on pneumatic shock absorbers.

Much effort was made to achieve 360 degree clear visibility from the wheel house. In order to achieve this, no steel construction was used for the wheel house fore and aft, and only a minimal steel construction was used on the sides. The double insulated glass rabbet-free windows are glued directly to the construction and to each other. The spacious wheel house contains a central control console which is designed for one-man operation of the vessel.

For a powerfully driven pusher boat which transports coal and ore, fuel costs form a substantial part of the total operating costs. That is why the performance of the pusher boats of ThyssenKrupp Veerhaven BV is checked and recorded using an advanced ‘Tempomaat’ system which was installed by Techno Fysica.

The propulsion system is amidships in the vessel. The system consists of three MaK 8M20 ship diesel engines, rated 1,360 KW at 900 rpm. Each engine has a Vulkan flexible coupling of type R-RATO G2120R-2200 and a Reintjes WAF 1943 gearbox; these give the three screws a speed of 256 rpm.
