BNR 177 - Viking

twin screw chine strake hull tugboat with stern roll and push bow

The Viking is a tugboat built by Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman, which is a unit of Kooiman Marine Group. The Viking is owned by Koerts Internationale Sleepdienst (KITS) from Delfzijl. This vessel is the first tugboat of this size for the shipyard and is more powerful than its predecessors. The powerful tugboat will be available all over the world through the mediation of Seacontractors.

The design was developed by our own design team, Kooiman Engineering, which made extensive use of 3D modelling software to make the production drawings. The agency also took care of the technical supervision.

The Viking is a multi-purpose and anchor handling tugboat for towing, pushing and port services. The two propellers give the vessel a bollard pull of 70 tonnes. The rudders can turn 150 degrees independently of each other. The hull is double-walled and both the hull and superstructure are made from soft steel.

A striking design element is the transverse thruster, which slopes downwards on the port and starboard sides, in order to remain efficient when the vessel carries a light load. The bow thruster is a 240 kW hydraulic bow thruster from Verhaar Omega. The five-blade Cunial propellers have a diameter of 2,400 mm. Propellers, nozzles and the shaft seals were supplied by Wärtsilä. Koedood Dieselservice supplied the main and auxiliary engines. The main engines are Mitsubishis model S12U-MPTK. They each deliver 2,238 kW of propulsion power at 1,100 rpm.

Intersona carried out the sound and vibration calculations. In order to reduce noise nuisance, the main engines and the exhausts of the auxiliary engines were fitted with Discom mufflers with integrated spark arresters. About 90% of the engine room was insulated with sound-absorbing materials by Thermatras.

The work deck was kept as low as possible and covered with wood, and has space for two 20-foot containers. At the stern there is a large, 6.5 metre-wide stern roll with a diameter of 1.2 metres and a working load of 150 tonnes. The pins on the aft deck are at an inward angle of around 45 degrees. The work deck also has a large hydraulic towing winch with two drums, supplied by Machine- & Lierenfabriek C. Kraaijveld B.V. It has a pulling power of 2 x 80 tonnes. On the starboard side there is a Heila hydraulic loading crane which can lift 9 tonnes at its maximum extension of 16.3 metres.
