BNR 183 - Mustang

twin screw chine strake hull tugboat with stern roll and push bow

After delivering the Viking in 2008, Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman in Zwijndrecht delivered an even more powerful Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel, called Mustang. Although the equipment and machines are largely the same, larger propellers bring the bollard pull power beyond 80 tonnes. Other improvements include the three windows at full height to provide a view on the aft deck, double rudders behind each propeller and an extra cabin for a crew member – at the expense of the captain’s room. The navigation light mast has likewise been designed again.

The Mustang is owned by G. Bouwman Towing and Shipping in Zierikzee. This vessel is the second tugboat of this size for the shipyard. The design was developed by our own Kooiman Marine Group design team, Kooiman Engineering, which made extensive use of 3D modelling software to make the production drawings. The agency also took care of the technical supervision during the construction.

The Mustang is a multi-purpose tugboat for towing, anchor handling, offshore supply, surveying, salvage and maintenance of wind farms. She is also used for various dredging and pipe laying projects.

Compared to tugboats supplied previously by Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman, such as the Viking, the Mustang has a deeper draught of 4.03 metres. This is caused by the large propellers, which have a diameter of 2,800 mm instead of the 2,400 mm on the Viking. The propellers rotate in nozzles with an internal diameter of 2,810 mm. This explains the greater bollard pull which is achieved with the same main engines. The five-blade Cunial propellers and nozzles were supplied by Van Voorden. The propeller shaft has internal seals by IHC and an outer seal by Wärtsilä. Koedood Dieselservice supplied the main and auxiliary engines. The main engines are Mitsubishis, model S12U-MPTK. They each deliver 2,238 kW of propulsion power at 1,100 rpm.

Intersona carried out the sound and vibration calculations. In order to reduce noise nuisance, the main engines and the exhausts of the auxiliary engines were fitted with Discom mufflers with integrated spark arresters. About 90% of the engine room was insulated with sound-absorbing materials by Thermatras.

The working deck is as low as freeboard regulations permit. It has been reinforced for a deck loading of 7 tonnes/m2, covered with wood, and has space for two 20-foot containers. At the back there is a large, 6.5 metre-wide stern roll with a diameter of 1.2 metres and a working load of 150 tonnes.

Machine- & Lierenfabriek C. Kraaijveld B.V. supplied the large hydraulic towing winch with two drums on the work deck. The winch has a pulling power of 2 x 80 tonnes, but on the brake it can hold 2 x 180 tonnes. On the starboard side there is a Heila hydraulic loading crane which can lift 9 tonnes at its maximum extension of 16.3 metres, and up to 22.5 tonnes when working alongside.

The Mustang will join the smaller Brandaris in the fleet of G. Bouwman Towing and Shipping BV. Right after delivery, the tug towed a pontoon from Ijmuiden to Vlissingen, but the jobs at hand will decide where the Mustang will be employed in the long run. The company was established in 1977 and offers a range of services, such as towage, anchor handling, offshore supply, survey, salvage and maintenance for windmill parks. The company has been involved with various dredging and pipe laying projects in Northern Europe.
