Kooiman Marine Group has built up a significant track record in push towing. We have several designs for pusher boats which are suitable for West European and South American waters. One of the designs, based on LNG propulsion, has obtained all approvals from ADN, CCNR and Lloyd’s Register. Furthermore, Kooiman Marine Group has developed various innovations in hull design, retractable flanking rudders, propeller shaft seals and twin speed coupling winches.
We have built four vessels for push towing on the Rhine. Apart from newbuilds, we have an extensive track record in the modification and conversion of pusher boats. Thus we have renovated a number of vessels to extend their life span. Several ships have been classified for South America. We fitted them especially with extra bunker capacity and widened them to restrict their draught. Kooiman Marine Group also supplies push towing components such as anchor and coupling winches, bollards and rudders.
Pusher boats are heavy consumers of fuel, especially when sailing upstream. That means pusher boats cause relatively high emissions of particulates. In time, stricter legislation concerning particulate emissions will force this sector to switch to other energy sources, such as LNG. In anticipation of this, Kooiman Marine Group has developed the design of an LNG-fuelled pusher boat.
